Softball is a team sport for players of all ages, genders and abilities. It challenges participants to develop mental agility and concentration as well as physical skills. As a team sport it has a strong social dimension and it attracts players from all walks of life. While Softball is traditionally a summer sport it can be played all year round, indoors and outdoors.
Broadly speaking, the 2 main versions of Softball played around the world are fastpitch and slowpitch. Many modifications have been made to cater for adults and children who want to play competitively or recreationally, who have limited time or are unable to commit to a full season, who want to play in single-sex or mixed teams – there is a version of the game for everyone.
Softball programs have been developed to encourage participation by children, Indigenous players, people with physical or intellectual disabilities and older players. Masters Softball for people 35 years and over is growing in popularity as a competitive and recreational sport.
Softball is a relatively easy and affordable game to play. Players starting out require a few basic skills, comfortable clothing and some equipment, which many Clubs provide. It is also helpful to have an understanding of Softball terminology and rules.
For players who are starting out or who are keen to improve their skills, there are coaching resources, in a range of formats. Many Clubs and Associations run regular coaching clinics – Find a Club near you and talk to them about coaching programs they offer new and more experienced players.
Softball is played around the world in more than 128 countries, so there are many opportunities for skilled and experienced Softballers to play overseas. The USA, Canada, Italy and Japan are popular destinations for Australian players.
